Look around as you drive through your city, whether you’re commuting to work or dropping your kids off at school, there are volunteers in our community supporting us in ways we may not readily notice. Community organizations are bustling year-round and could use your help to keep programs running smoothly. Here are a couple of unique opportunities you may not have known.

Chalk art in front of The Record building December 2016

Walking around in downtown Stockton, take a minute to look around you. You’ll see creative chalk art by Joy Neas, artist+activist and long-time volunteer. Finding art in unexpected places brightens our surroundings and our mood! How can you help?  The Great Big Read, Healthy Kids Day and Family Day In The Park are all looking for chalk artists to volunteer. The Great Big Read and Healthy Kids Day are coming up soon on April 29, 2017, in downtown Stockton. You can also plan to volunteer for Family Day At The Park on September 16, 2017, inside University Park, Stockton.

Little Free Library in front of San Joaquin County Public Health Service

You may have driven past one of these colorful stands – did you know it’s a Little Free Library? Quite literally it’s a little stand, usually no bigger than a newspaper stand, where you can pick out a book and return it when you’ve finished. These little free libraries encourage literacy thorughout our communities. How can you help? Books are accepted year-round at their drop off location at Delta Health Care 4662 Precissi Ln #200 Stockton, CA. Children’s and young adult books are highly requested though all books will be accepted. They also have an option for you to become a steward of a Little Free Library too!

National Volunteer Week is April 23-29, 2017. It is a perfect time to reach out to a local organization to learn how to become a volunteer! You’ll find lots of organizations when you search Community Connections. They have compiled dozens of organizations throughout our San Joaquin County in an easy to search format.

As you get started, remember to consider your commitment by using this simple process and be the best volunteer you can with these tips.
