Cultural Spotlight: Halloween

Halloween photo of a moon and trees without leaves

My Latinx culture is not a costume. Don’t wear a sombero. Don’t wear a mariachi suit. Don’t wear a Catrina or Catrin outfit because Dia de los Muertos is not Halloween.

Try these ideas instead! Latinx movies and television have many ghoulish, spooky, and funny characters you can be for Halloween.

Classic comedy

El Chavo del Ocho is a long running 1970’s comedy sitcom with several characters you’d have fun dressing up as like El Chavo (L) and Chilindrina (R) pictured here.
El Chapulín Colorado, another classic 1970’s television show, is a fun character!
Betty La Fea or Ugly Betty, whichever way you’ve seen this show, she is such a fun character to dress up as!

Ghoulish

La Llorona
Only from the mind of Guillermo Del Toro could such creepy beautiful characters come to life. This is La Fauna from Pan’s Labyrinth.
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark gives us more creepy characters thanks to Guillermo Del Toro. This is Ruthie who is suffering from an unfortunate spider bite.

Los Espookys spookiness

Water Spirit and Andres! This is so cool to see!
I love this fem version of Andres!
This makes me laugh! The outfits! The Los Espooky’s scene! I love this!
Juan Carlos and Tati! So cute! Ok, so not exactly “spooky”. I’m sharing because I’m just so excited to see these characters out on Halloween. Watch for Los Espookys Season 2 on HBO.

Get in on the action with these Latinx super heroes

This costume as Gert Yorkes of Marvel’s Runaways is perfect!
Great version of Miles Morales aka Spider-Man (R)!
This little Ghost Rider is so cute! Hopefully Marvel’s Ghost Rider, aka Robbie Reyes, will make it to the screen soon.

What will you be this Halloween?

There are many more characters you can dress up for Halloween without disrespecting Latinx culture. Do you have other characters to suggest? Leave a comment!
