Finding Events For National Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 – October 15, 2017

National Hispanic Heritage Month #HHM begins Friday, September 15, 2017, and will continue through Sunday, October 15, 2017. Find events where you can enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors our culture brings to the community.

You can start with the National Hispanic Heritage Month, US Government website, for information from national organizations about their activities.  There are also links to an education portal and even Pinterest board!

Here in California, you can click on The Office of Historic Preservation website to find a few links to organizations holding activities across the state.

This is where I found information for Napa Valley’s Latino Heritage Month “Honoring Our Braceros”. If you plan to be in wine country, why not visit the Mexican wineries listed here in the article “Meet the Latino Winemakers of Napa Valley” written by Yara Simón for Remezcla.

I’m excited to share the 19th Annual San Francisco Latino Film Festival has a wonderful line up of features, shorts, and documentaries. Personally, I’m excited for the screening of Doña Diabla starring Maria Felix and Mexican Spitfire Sees a Ghost starring Lupe Velez! This free screening is shown in partnership with the San Francisco Public Library to highlight contributions these women made during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

While in San Francisco, you can’t miss an opportunity to take a self-guided walking tour of the iconic Mission District with this map Calle 24 Cuentos del Barrio Self-Guided Walking Tour Brochure (San Francisco)!

A little closer to home the San Joaquin County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is holding their 1st Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off in the Plaza at Tenth Street Plaza, 1010 10th St, Modesto, CA

Right here in my hometown of Stockton, CA, there are several events to enjoy throughout the month.

San Joaquin Delta College has a list of activities from lectures, performances, and fun activities to participate in on campus. Follow their Facebook page here for updates.

The folklorico dancing continues with art and live music as The Mexican Heritage Center will host a free Mexican Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at DeCarli Square 31 E. Channel St., Stockton, CA.

My search for more local events will continue then I’ll post updates!

I did find another event, although not named in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, it fits the theme and time frame. You won’t want to miss The San Joaquin Tamale Festival, a 2-day family event to celebrate California cuisine! It’s held on Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th from 12 noon – 8:00 PM both days at the San Joaquin Fair Grounds 1658 S. Airport Way, Stockton CA.

What will your family do to honor your heritage this month? Share your plans with me!
