Going Back to College? 2 Resources You Need Now!

It’s been 20 years since I’ve read an algebra word problem. I haven’t had to decide between commas and semicolons in over 10 years. Why am I subjecting myself to this madness?

I’m one of many adults returning to college to better ourselves and careers. After so many years away from classroom curriculum I needed help getting back into the swing of things. I found two resources be extremely useful.

“Grammarly’s free writing app makes sure everything you type is easy to read, effective and mistake free.” – Grammarly

When we become used to reading and writing on social media we think our “formal” writing looks correct although it’s littered with incorrect phrases, misuse of punctuations, misspellings, the list goes on.

My English teacher pointed out an embarrassing mistake.  My first essay of the semester had semi-colons popping up everywhere! Then I noticed how often I used semi-colons in my social media posts. Aha! I had become so used to dropping them in my sentences I didn’t think twice about it. With Grammarly, I’m able to proof my writing to avoid those type of mistakes. Although you can get a lot out of the free app, Grammarly offers a paid subscription for enhanced services.

“Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom.” – Khan Academy

What a life savor! Math was never my strong suit in high school. With Khan Academy, I’ve been able to work my way through the Algebra lessons to refresh my memory and build my confidence.  It makes no sense to continue to be “afraid” of learning math when there are ways to make it fun. I love the little sound it makes when I have the right answer. I enjoy collecting points for the amount of time spent and solving difficult problems. These positive reinforcements have warmed me up to Algebra!

I know you’ll find these sites helpful! Good luck furthering your education to achieve your career goals!
