How do you honor your loved ones who have passed?

Dia De Los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition to honor loved ones who are no longer with us on this earth. National Geographic shares an insightful overview here. I believe the tradition has become internationally popular because people want to honor their family and friends in a special way. We want to feel a connection to their spirit. How do you honor and remember your loved ones?

Framed photo of woman. Flowers pasted to photo frame. Plate of strawberries and empanadas.
I was proud to create a small alter for my great grandmother Martha Alvarez in 2013. Each item around the photo frame and on the plate have a significant meaning of her. However, lesson learned: Do not use real food. I had followed an instruction which was supposed to preserve them however, well, let’s just say it didn’t work.
The Mexican Heritage Center held a Catrina Pageant in 2018. Amy Harrison was the winner. The contest continues this year too! Will you enter?
