What Latinas can do today to fight for equal pay
November 20, 2019 was recognized as #LatinaEqualPay Day. This date represents the date Latinas will catch up to White male’s 2018 earnings. It takes 1 year, 11 months, & 20 days for Latinas to make that amount! Did you know last year this date was November 1st?! The pay gap has widened!
Events were held nationally to bring awareness to this dangerous trend. Twitter storms were held. Instagram and Facebook lives were streamed. Did you catch any of it? I found the important highlights were what we can do to stop this trend and demand action.
Perform your own pay audit. Find out what the average pay is for your position in your geographic area. This is the first step to understand where you stand.
Stop feeling grateful for a job. One of the common things we say to ourselves has been, “I’m grateful to have a job.” Or we may say, “If I can do more, my employer will eventually pay me more.” Either way we are settling for someone else to take charge of our pay, our earnings. Stop! Know the measure of success for your job position then show how you meet and exceed expectations. Show them they should be grateful to have you!
Don’t undercut each other. This focuses on the work Latinas do as entreprenuers, creatives, and makers. I’m guilty of this as well. We do want the best prices, we do want the deals, but let’s consider we are undercutting ourselves in that process too. We are taking from another Latina who is working to feed her family, support a home, support her education, and importantly supporting her business. Let’s pay each other what we are worth!
What have you learned? What will you do now?
On November 20, 2019, Latinas across the nation are waking up to the reality their pay gap is widening. Latinas know there is a lot that is needed from all sides to fix this dangerous problem. Latinas know that the first step will be up to us to work together to demand more and fix it.
