Reading With Children – What Is That Really Like?

Reading with children – what is that really like? We may think it’s sitting down with our child while holding a book and our child listening quietly. That may be one way. But I’m glad it’s not the only way! I’m excited to share my first video reading along with my son, Titus who is 1 1/2 years old. It may seem a bit odd that we aren’t actually reading. Instead, we are practicing “The Three T’s” and setting the stage for further development. I learned this technique after reading Thirty Million Words by Dana Suskind, MD. I explain more about how this book changed my perspective in this How She Does It post.

So, what is it really like getting our kids to read? From newborn to teenagers, the process is different and at times challenging.

I’ve found 2 things consistent and true

  1. Lead by example
  2. Start early

Thinking back to my younger mom days, there were many responsibilities to juggle. Although we did family activities together, I can’t say for sure we spent dedicated time reading.

I recently read Thirty Million Words by Dana Suskind, MD which dives deep into the findings of a 30,000,000 word gap between children of professional and welfare families by the time their child is three years old. This sounds too unbelievable, right? But sadly, it’s true. Thankfully, the book explains an important key is how and how much to talk to your child and it shares practices like “The Three T’s”. Reading with children – what is that really like? It’s like talking with a good friend; you listen, take turns talking, and have fun!

I’m glad to learn that just a few minutes of reading; tuning in, talking more and taking turns with a young child can pay off big time for their development. You can believe I’m making the time to read now!

And now is a great time for you to get started too!
